The POWER of the Holy Ghost- Rom. 15:13
Intro: We believe that the Holy Ghost is the third person of the Trinity. We believe the Holy Ghost works in the conviction of sinners and the salvation of the soul. We also believe in the Baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. We believe in Holy Ghost power, that this Power from on High is for today, not just for the days of the Disciples and Apostles. We believe that this Power does more in the believer’s life than just cause him to speak in other tongues. I. Promised Power. Jesus began to teach the disciples about the coming of the Holy Ghost as another Comforter in John 14-16. He told them that it was expedient (necessary, very important) that he go away and then he would send them another Comforter, the Holy Ghost; that the H G would “abide with them forever” (Jn 14:16) He told them in our text that they were to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high. On the Day of Pentecost- God poured out the Holy Ghost on the 120 gathered there praying. There was a Sound of rushing mighty wind; Tongues of Fire on lit upon each of them; they were all Baptized in Holy Ghost and began Speaking in other tongues as Spirit gave utterance. The Power of the Holy Ghost had come. Thank God this Promised Power did not stop with just the 120 for Peter declared in Acts 2:39 “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Notice those mentioned? 1) Those present that day, 2) Their children, whether they had children on that day or not, and 3) Those who not present there that day but would later be “called” by God to receive this great Gift and blessing. This Promised Power is still available today! II. Overcoming Power. The fact that Holy Ghost power would be Overcoming Power was proved true on the very day it was poured out. Peter, the one who lingered at the enemy’s fire and denied Jesus three times, now stood up and preached boldly to the crowd gathered there that day. He declared, “These are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.” The same man who had Denied the Lord was now Declaring the Gospel of Jesus Christ with boldness. He was not Afraid, He was Anointed. No longer was there a Fear of being associated with the followers of Jesus. You and I need this Overcoming Power. Rom. 8:1,2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Rom 8:12-14 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. This Power is given so that we might Overcome: Sin- Satan- Demons- the World- the Flesh- the Old Sinful Nature. Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. III. Witnessing Power. Jesus told the disciples in Acts 1:8 that they would receive power after that the HG came upon them and they would be witnesses of the Lord in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth. Jerusalem- their Community; Judea- their Country; Samaria- their Continent; the Uttermost part of earth- their Complete Commission. Acts 4:31... they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. In Acts 13 the Holy Ghost specifically called Paul and Barnabas to the work of Evangelism throughout the world. Amy Carmichel was a missionary in India for 56 years and she wrote: “The reason we need Pentecost is that It creates a Passion for souls and a love for the lost that will not die; It puts power in our prayers and a fire that burns in our soul in reaching for the unsaved. We Need Witnessing Power! TODAY! IV. Enduring Power. We know that Jesus said those who would “endure to the end” would be saved. We also know that the devil does everything in his power to cause Christians to give up- to quit- to backslide. If you and I are going to make it all the way to Heaven, we need this Enduring Power. Jesus said that he would give us power “over all the power of the enemy.” Paul in 2 Cor. 4:7-9 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. 2Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, & of love, and of a sound mind. 1 Peter 1:5- we are “kept by the power of God.” V. Rejoicing Power. On the Day of Pentecost, they rejoiced in Holy Ghost power and the onlookers thought they were drunk. After they had been arrested & threatened, in Acts 4- then arrested, threatened and even beaten in Acts 5. Acts 5:41- And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 13:50-52- the Jews stirred up opposition and “ raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts... 52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Rom15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace..., through the power of the Holy Ghost. This rejoicing is not just an emotional feeling. It is the result of the Power of the Holy Ghost that gets down inside and must have a release. There is Rejoicing in the Holy Ghost in spite of feelings, sickness, disappointment, trials, persecution, and even in the valley of the shadow of death. P romised Power, O vercoming Power, W itnessing Power., E nduring Power, R ejoicing Power.
