Learning, Living, and Looking
Titus 2:11-14

Intro: This passage is full of tremendous doctrine:
vs. 11- Grace of God- Salvation, has appeared to all men [Incarnation & Free Will of man]
vs. 14- He (Jesus) gave himself for us [Atonement]
- that he might redeem us [Redemption]
- purify unto himself [Sanctification]
- a peculiar people [Separation]
- zealous of good works [Faith & Works]

I. Learning. (The Grace of God is “teaching us.”)
The Christian life begins with the grace of God that brings Salvation. First, get a BA degree- Born Again. You and I must be washed in the blood, forgiven, cleansed from sin and freed from its dominion. This is just the beginning! The Christian life is a Lifetime, Learning Experience.
Mat. 11:28- Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest; take my yoke upon you and LEARN of me.
Grace does not involve anything that we can EARN, but much that we are to LEARN.

Jesus said that the Comforter, the Holy Ghost would teach us all things and bring all things to our remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Jn 14:26
The Holy Ghost is not just to make a person speak in tongues and feel great excitement; he is our Wonderful Teacher. We are to be disciples or learners. We are told to learn to fear God- Deut 4:10; to Learn God’s statutes & commands- Ps 119:71; to Learn to do Good- Is 1:17; to Learn to maintain good works- Titus 3:14; to Learn doctrine- Rom. 16:17; to Learn to be content in whatever state we are in- Phil. 4:11
TEXT- The Grace of God Teaches Us that we are to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and that we are to Live Soberly, Righteously, and Godly in this present world. We are not just to Learn these things in our heads, but we are to put what we learn into practice.

II. Living (“we should Live”)
So, how are we to live? Well, Paul gives the Negative first and tells us to “deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.” Whether we like it or not, Do’s and Don’ts are a fact of life. They are a fact of life when it comes to parents and children; when it comes to the business world; when it comes to driving and traffic laws; when it comes to civil government.
These Do’s and Don’ts are NOT for Salvation, but for the Christian Life AFTER salvation.
The Grace of God brings salvation and we receive it through Faith. Then, this same Grace of God begins to Teach us How to Live.
1 John 2:15- “Love not the World, neither the things that in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of flesh and the lust of eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but of the world.”
Jesus taught that if any man would come after him, he would have to deny himself, take up his cross and follow Jesus.
Jesus said if your eye offends you (causes you to sin), pluck it out; if your hand or foot offends you, cut it off. Making the point that being holy before the Lord is more important than our physical being.
Paul said that we are to come out from among the world and be separate, and touch not the unclean thing; that we are to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Cor. 7:1)
We are exhorted in Heb. 12:2- to lay aside every weights and sins that so easily beset or hinder us.
Then Paul in our Text speaks of the Positive aspect of Christian living: live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.
Soberly- with temperance, self control; not wild and out of control
Righteously- doing what is Right in sight of God; according to God’s Holy Word.
Godly- character like God’s; reverence for God; living in God’s presence; God’s will is your will; God’s love is your love; God’s purity is your purity
“In this present world”- not hiding out from world in a cave or monastery; not isolated from everything and everyone- but as LIGHT in the MIDST of Darkness, our Light shining before men that they see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.
Let your Light shine at Home; School; Job; Office; Store; Doctor’s waiting room; Neighborhood; Bank; Church; Among Family; Around Friends
One man wrote:
I sought to hear the voice of God
And climbed the highest steeple,
But God declared, “Go down again, I live among the people.”

III. Looking. (Looking for that blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ)
Looking- waiting in expectation; looking to receive something or someone;
Mk 15:43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honorable counselor, which also waited for the kingdom of God
The same word used in Luke 2 of both Simeon and Anna; of Simeon (waiting for consolation of Israel) of Anna (looked for redemption)
Lu 12:36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return
We must not only Claim to be Pilgrims and strangers in this world BUT LIVE as Pilgrims and Strangers in this world, whose citizenship is in heaven. We are to be LOOKING, waiting expectantly, watching with anticipation for Jesus Christ to come in the clouds.
He will descend from heaven with a shout.
We will hear the voice of the Arch angel and the trump of God.
We will be caught up together in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
We will be Changed from mortality to immortality; from earthly to heavenly; from solely physical beings to spiritual beings
The old song says, “Glorified with him forever, Death will be lost in Victory; I’ll have a new body and I’ll have a new life”
We will go Home! We will reach Heaven and receive our Eternal Reward.

What ever happens to you and I in this life, It’s worth it all to hold fast to Jesus Christ, to Learn From Him, To Live For Him, and to Look for Him.
For unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (Heb. 9:28) Have a Happy and Holy New Year!
